Haarig, 2008. Acrylic on canvas, 185x185cm

TWOZEROZEROEIGHT
Michel Carmantrand‘s abstractions take you into a world where your destination is unknown. His sensitive use of colour is somewhere between an infinite empty space and a direction where objects connect with each other in a chaotic fashion. The colours first appear to run across the canvas and then explode. It is impossible to interpret them on a reality level. Indeed, the arbitrary constellations reveal powerful and dynamic processes that appear to possess a collaborative cohesion. The colours are in free fall and the net that could cushion this fall is the viewer him/herself.
But some objects fall through

the net. Every attempt to catch them ends in more chaos and the connections with each and the connections with each other become blurred. Boundless dimensional expansion where perspectives constantly change with every  additional leap.

Michel Carmantrand does, however, succeed in capturing the transparency of spaces so that they lie between movement and a fixed position. A frozen moment of the happy leap into the unknown where there is no bottom or top.
